Thanks, John.
All:
I greatly appreciate your prayers and support respecting our short term
mission trip to Odessa, Ukraine last week (several of us returned last
night). I will provide additional details of our trip to the class at
some point in the near future, but I wanted to give you a quick update
of a couple of events, some encouraging and another discouraging.
As some of you know, Tricia Prather and her Sunday school class have
been involved with Orphanage 88 for several years. One of the projects
included renovating the building in which the showers were located.
After approximately three years of effort, the shower renovations were
finally completed. However, on Wednesday night of last week, I am sorry
to report that the building next to the showers caught on fire, and the
fire spread to the building in which the showers were located.
Unfortunately, the showers are now lost (see attached pictures). As
unfathomable as it is to grasp, the initial thought is that this is an
arson situation. Property values for the land on which the orphanage
sits have increased dramatically over the past few years, and therefore,
people will do (and may have done) most anything to push the orphanage
out. Please keep Orphanage 88 in your prayers, including thankfulness
that no one was injured in the fire.
For the good news, I am very excited about the possibility of beginning
work with another orphanage in Odessa, Orphanage 34. A former member of
the PCA church plant in Odessa (she recently married a Swedish pastor
who planted another church in Odessa) has been working with Orphanage 34
for approximately 5 years, and I truly feel that there is very fertile
ground there. Orphanage 34 is a home for children who have learning
disabilities, including autism. Again, I will offer additional
information at a later date, but want to ask that, in the meantime, you
pray that God will provide some direction for His will as it pertains to
support of Orphanage 34.
Thanks again,
John
